Sad Opposites

As you can see from these pictures, South Shields is doing a great job in getting the best out of its sea front. On a sunny day like this, even though it is in the winter and cold wind bites at any exposed skin, it still gives you a feel good factor about being outdoors.

But.... If you look closely to this picture, you will see something that as we move into 2012, should start to be a thing of the past, ( this is in no way criticising South Shields) but I feel given these hard times we may see more of it!



Can you see it? ..... The lime green bump tucked into the corner of the walkway is someone who is either homeless or sleeping rough. I know that on some occasions people make the choice to live this way, and good lick to them! I also know this is generalising but I think most would prefer not to?

It is very sad that we are now seeing some people sleeping rough who are unemployed for the first time in their life and really feel helpless and don't know where to turn or what to do!

I wish there was a simple answer but we all know that there is not. This new year, instead of walking past the homeless with an embarrassed rush of blood, or look upon them scornfully, please spare a thought that given the increasing pressures on us all to just keep our jobs (or find jobs) most of us are only a couple of months pay away from this possibility.

Try to help someone homeless or a charity that supports them by the end of January. If you do then please post it on this blog. Happy New Year to all of us who can stay in a warm bed.

Can you imagine applying to this advert!

Ernest Shackleton placed this advert in papers around London in the early 1900′s. You might imagine that the response would be terrible.

Who would be mad enough to seek out a ‘hazardous Journey….with safe return doubtful’?

Well, it seemed to strike a cord with men of the day because the response was overwhelming and Shackleton was oversubscribed for his Antarctic expedition.

What would you have done?








Why was this advert so powerful and what can you learn from it?



It is short and straight to the point. If you can make your point in about 25 words, don’t take 150!


It appeals to a human emotional desire. Most adverts get caught up in the language of features. Shackleton managed to speak straight to one of mans basic human desires. The desire for adventure. What emotions can you speak to in your sales letters and adverts?


It is truthful. Frighteningly so! There was no need for hyperbole about how great the adventure would be because Shackleton emphasised the ‘negatives’ and managed to ultimately turn them into benefits which were compelling to his target audiene. If you have so called ‘negatives’ in your product or service, how can you emphasise them to show your honesty, integrity and maybe even make them seem an irresistible attraction?

Businesses in North of England are more likely to fail By James Hurley

A “NORTH-SOUTH” divide in the company failure rate widened in 2011 as 21,000 companies went bust across the UK, according to research by an accountancy firm.
Businesses in the North East and North West of England were more than one and a half times as likely to go bust than their counterparts in the south in 2011, RSM Tenon said.

ROUGHLY one in every 40 companies in the North East and North West became insolvent this year, compared with less than one in 70 in London and the South East.
In the latest blow to the Coalition’s plans to encourage a manufacturing-led recovery, the research showed that companies which are failing fastest in the North tend to be manufacturing-based.

Carl Jackson, head of RSM Tenon’s recovery service, said: “Sadly, it’s a return to the old story: northern England used to be geared towards industry, but, judged by proportion of insolvencies, it appears that industry is still deserting it.
“If you make furniture, industrial materials, pharmaceutical, medical and toiletries, or work in the wood, paper and board industry, you have a far higher chance of going bust if your company is based in the North than if its headquarters are below Watford.”

The impact of public sector cuts has yet to have a significant impact on the divide, Mr Jackson added. “It’s tempting to blame the rift on the effect of [spending cuts], especially given that the North – and particularly the North East – is relatively dependent on the public sector compared to elsewhere in the country,” he said.
“However, the proportion of failed public services companies in the North and the South was roughly similar this year.”
